West Coast Regional Information

The West Coast has the smallest population of any New Zealand region, with only 31,000 people inhabiting the fifth largest regional area. The region is also the wettest in New Zealand, being subjected to the country's highest average annual rainfall.

Isolated from the rest of the South Island by the Southern Alps, West Coasters have developed a unique culture of their own that focuses on the pioneering values of self-reliance, loyalty and hospitality. The region's main centres are Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika, all of which offer bases from which to explore the region's natural and historic attractions and adventure activities.

In the Westland Tai Poutini National Park, the magnificent Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers descend from the Southern Alps to 200 metres above sea level, making them easily accessible for viewing.
